Refresh Your Riding Skills

Many riders cover more kilometres during a two-week expedition than they normally ride in several months. They may also encounter gravel, sand, mud, steep hairpins, river crossings or heavy traffic that is unfamiliar at home.

With limited recent riding time, practise before departure. A professional road or off-road course can improve braking, low-speed control, body position and confidence. Training cannot remove every surprise; however, it gives you better tools when the road changes.

Pack Smart and Light

MotoBirds sends participants a tour-specific factsheet with a suggested packing list. Please read it. It reflects the climate, luggage arrangements and practical realities of that particular trip.

Most riders need far less than they imagine. For many supported tours, one soft roll bag of around 40 litres is sufficient, but always follow the luggage limits in the factsheet for your specific tour.

Run a Final Pre-Trip Check

Lay everything out several days before departure and check it against the factsheet. Do you have the right plug adaptor? Two charging cables for your phone? Prescription medication in the original packaging? Mosquito repellent, sun protection and spare glasses if you need them?

Apply the same check to your riding gear. Next, inspect zips, fasteners, the visor, waterproofing and anything that has been sitting unused. A final check is cheap; replacing a forgotten specialist item in a remote destination may not be possible.

Organise Visas, Licences and Documents Early

We will explain the tour requirements, but each traveller remains responsible for documents issued in their own name. Before departure, check current visa rules and International Driving Permit requirements on official government websites. Importantly, they depend on factors including nationality, residence and destination country.

Therefore, verify the requirements early, make copies and keep essential documents accessible but protected from water. Finally, avoid leaving applications until the last moment.

The country-specific factsheet covers the practical information needed for the tour. Go one step further and read about the history, culture and customs of the places you will visit. As a result, understanding what you are looking at turns a beautiful route into a richer journey.

Travel Responsibly

Responsible travel is not complicated. Stay on permitted roads and tracks. In addition, avoid riding across fields or fragile terrain. Respect local communities, dress and photograph people appropriately, reduce noise where possible and take your rubbish with you.

At the same time, a motorcycle gives extraordinary access. That privilege comes with a responsibility to leave each place in good condition and respect the people who live there.

Prepare for Life Offline

Mobile data is not universal. On some routes there may be no signal; elsewhere the network may be slow, unreliable or expensive. Therefore, download offline maps before departure and make sure you know how to use them.

In addition, participants receive the practical route and accommodation information relevant to their tour. Keep hotel locations and essential contacts available offline. That is useful not only if you become separated from the group, but also when you leave the hotel for dinner and discover that your phone has stopped cooperating.

Preparation should create confidence, not the illusion that every moment can be controlled. Weather changes, roads close, motorcycles object and travel occasionally produces days that no spreadsheet predicted.
