YAKS, YURTS AND DIRT: OFF-ROAD IN THE LAND OF NOMADS
This is Kyrgyzstan the way it should be ridden: on the adventure motorcycle that ticked all the boxes at the last Romaniacs edition! Through high valleys, gravel tracks, mountain passes, yurt camps and the huge open spaces of the Tien Shan. Over 11 days, 10 nights and 8 riding days, this supported Kyrgyzstan off-road motorcycle tour takes you deep into one of Central Asia’s best adventure riding destinations.
The tour includes the CFMoto 450MT motorcycle, motorcycle fuel for the planned route, MotoBirds guidance, local support, luggage transport, accommodation, most meals and selected attractions along the way. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included during the tour, except lunches in Bishkek, so the price feels complete and the logistics stay simple.
This is not a stripped-down rental-bike trip. It is a fully supported Gravel Heroes expedition through Bishkek, Kyzyl-Oi, Song-Kul Lake, Tash Rabat, Naryn, Issyk-Kul, Karakol, Skazka Canyon, Sary-Jaz, Karkara and the mountain country of Kyrgyzstan, with yurts, nomad culture, local food, hot springs, eagle-hunting traditions and big off-road riding days built into the experience.
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HIGH ROADS OF THE TIEN SHAN
We begin in Bishkek, where the city gives way quickly to mountain roads, open valleys and the first taste of Kyrgyzstan’s rougher side. From there, the route climbs towards Kyzyl-Oi and into the high country, where asphalt becomes optional and the landscape starts doing most of the talking.
The heart of the expedition is Song-Kul, one of Kyrgyzstan’s great high-altitude lakes. We ride through alpine pastures, sleep in yurts and experience the kind of big-sky silence that makes this country so addictive for adventure riders. From there, the route continues towards Tash Rabat, the 15th-century Silk Road caravanserai hidden deep in the mountains near the old trading routes of Central Asia.
The second half of the tour links the rugged interior with the vast blue of Issyk-Kul, the cultural atmosphere of Karakol, the surreal shapes of Skazka Canyon and, if conditions allow, the remote borderland tracks of Sary-Jaz and Karkara. Along the way, included meals, fuel, support and selected attractions keep the focus where it belongs: on the riding, the landscapes and the experience of Kyrgyzstan.

WHO IS THIS EXPEDITION FOR?
This tour is intended for riders who are comfortable on gravel, broken mountain roads, stones, dust and basic off-road sections. You do not need to be an enduro racer, but you do need to be confident handling a motorcycle when the surface gets loose, uneven or unpredictable.
Kyrgyzstan rewards riders who enjoy real terrain. Some days will be flowing and scenic. Others will be slower, rougher and more physical. The route includes high passes, water crossings, remote valleys and sudden weather changes. This is a Gravel Heroes tour, not a luxury road cruise.
GUIDANCE, MOTORCYCLE AND LOGISTICAL SUPPORT
The group is led by a MotoBirds tour leader and supported by a local team. A support vehicle carries the participants’ main luggage and assists with route logistics throughout the expedition.
CFMoto 450MT motorcycles are included in the tour price, together with fuel for the planned riding route. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included during the tour, except lunches in Bishkek. Selected attractions are also included, so you are not faced with a long list of small local payments during the trip.
The itinerary may be adjusted if required because of weather, road conditions, river levels, access restrictions, border-zone rules or other circumstances beyond MotoBirds’ control.
THE FREEDOM TO EXPERIENCE KYRGYZSTAN PROPERLY
This is a supported off-road motorcycle expedition, not a rigid sightseeing convoy. The goal is to ride Kyrgyzstan properly: to feel the distance, the dust, the altitude, the empty valleys and the rhythm of nomad country.
Some moments will be about the riding. Others will be about stopping in the middle of nowhere, sharing a meal, sleeping in a yurt, watching the light move across the mountains or soaking in hot springs after a long day on the bike.
The support vehicle carries the main luggage, so riders can focus on the route without overloading the motorcycle. You ride light, stay mobile and get the kind of Kyrgyzstan experience that made this country one of Central Asia’s best adventure motorcycle destinations.

Rider gear — prepare for heat, altitude, dust and sudden cold
Each rider must bring their own complete protective motorcycle gear, including:
- A full-face or adventure helmet
- Adventure or enduro boots with good ankle and shin protection
- Two pairs of glove: warm and cold weather
- Fully waterproof riding gear or a reliable waterproof outer layer
We strongly recommend bringing two pairs of gloves — one lighter pair for warmer valley sections and one warm, waterproof pair for high-altitude days — together with thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer and a neck warmer. A clear visor or goggles, an anti-fog insert and strong sun protection are also extremely useful.
There is no single perfect outfit for Kyrgyzstan. The best solution is a flexible layering system that lets you adapt quickly: hot and dusty in the valleys, cold and windy on the passes, and sometimes wet or muddy when the weather turns in the mountains.

The support vehicle carries your main luggage, allowing you to enjoy Kyrgyzstan. Please limit yourself to one soft, waterproof travel bag, preferably weighing no more than 20 kg.
On the motorcycle, carry what you may need during the day: waterproofs, an extra layer, water, documents, sun protection and personal essentials. Laundry services are available at selected hotels along the route, so there is no need to pack clothing for the entire expedition. You will reward yourself with simple packing: fewer things to manage, more freedom to enjoy the road.
IMPORTANT, REMEMBER:
Far from the everyday world
On some stages, the road leaves towns far behind and runs through high pastures, mountain valleys, gravel tracks and open steppe where services are limited and mobile-phone signal may disappear completely. Internet access can also be slow or unavailable in remote locations, especially around yurt camps and high mountain areas. Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. A warm morning in the valley can become cold wind, rain, hail or mud at altitude. Every rider must be prepared for sun, dust, cold temperatures and wet conditions, even in summer.
Basic travel insurance is included in the tour package. However, because we travel through isolated regions where specialist medical care may be far away, we strongly recommend additional medical evacuation and rescue coverage, such as Global Rescue or an equivalent policy.
Carry a payment card together with a reasonable amount of cash for drinks, personal expenses, optional activities and other local costs. Card payments and cash machines are not always be available outside Bishkek and larger towns.
Visas and driving license
Many nationalities, including EU citizens, can currently enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa for short tourist stays, but entry rules can change. Your passport should be valid for the full trip and meet airline and border requirements. If you need a visa because of your nationality, you are responsible for obtaining it before travel. You national driving license is sufficient.

DAY 1 — Arrival in Bishkek
Arrival in Bishkek, transfer to the hotel and time to settle in after the flight. Depending on arrival times, we may explore some of the city’s highlights: Ala-Too Square, Oak Park, Soviet-era mosaics and the busy food stalls of Osh Bazaar.
DAY 2 — Bishkek → Kyzyl-Oi | approx. 220 km
We leave Bishkek and ride towards the mountains. The route climbs through Too-Ashuu Pass and into the wide Suusamyr high pastures before following the dramatic Kokomeren River canyon views towards the red-rock village of Kyzyl-Oi. This is the first proper taste of Kyrgyzstan’s scale: open valleys, rougher roads, mountain air and the feeling that the city is already very far behind.
DAY 3 — Kyzyl-Oi → Song-Kul | approx. 125 km
Today we ride towards Song-Kul, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful high-altitude lakes, located at around 3,016 m. Depending on the final route and weather conditions, the approach may include remote tracks and high-pass riding. At Song-Kul, we stay in yurts surrounded by open steppe, grazing animals and huge skies. Optional short horse riding may be available before sunset.
DAY 4 — Song-Kul → MELS Pass → Tash Rabat → Naryn | approx. 290 km
A big mountain day through remote highland terrain. We leave Song-Kul and ride towards the MELS Ash area, crossing wide alpine plateaus and rougher tracks before continuing towards Tash Rabat. Tash Rabat is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most atmospheric Silk Road sites: a stone caravanserai hidden in a glacial valley, far from the main roads. After the visit, we continue towards Naryn, with views of the Naryn River canyon along the way.
DAY 5 — Naryn → Tosor / Ara-Bel Pass → Issyk-Kul | approx. 220 km
This is one of the major adventure riding days of the tour. If conditions allow, we cross one of Kyrgyzstan’s highest rideable mountain routes in the Tosor / Ara-Bel area, reaching approximately 3,800–3,900 m.
Expect big landscapes, rough tracks, high-altitude riding and a proper sense of remoteness. We then drop towards the south shore of Issyk-Kul, with a possible stop at Barskoon waterfalls if time and route conditions allow.
DAY 6 — Issyk-Kul Rest Day | 0 km
A day to rest, recover and enjoy the lake after several demanding riding days. Depending on the final location and local arrangements, the day may include swimming, relaxed time by Issyk-Kul and an eagle-hunting demonstration. This is also a useful buffer day if weather or route conditions require adjustments earlier in the tour.
DAY 7 — Issyk-Kul → Skazka Canyon → Karakol | approx. 185 km
We continue along Issyk-Kul and visit Skazka Canyon, also known as Fairy Tale Canyon, where wind and erosion have shaped the sandstone into surreal red and orange formations. From there, we ride towards Karakol, one of the most interesting towns in eastern Kyrgyzstan. Depending on timing, we may visit the Dungan Mosque and the wooden Orthodox Cathedral. In the evening, try Karakol’s local speciality: ashlan-fu.
DAY 8 — Karakol → Jyrgalan | approx. 250 km
Today we head into the Jyrgalan Valley, a green mountain area known for alpine scenery, high pastures and excellent off-road riding possibilities. The direct distance is not long, but the day is designed for riding, not just transferring. Depending on conditions, we may include an off-road loop, ridge viewpoints or additional mountain tracks. This is one of the best days for riders who enjoy loose surfaces and open terrain.
DAY 9 — Jyrgalan → Cholpon-Ata | approx. 215 km
We leave the Jyrgalan area and ride towards the north shore of Issyk-Kul. The route may include hot springs, mountain valleys and, depending on conditions, the Semenov and Grigoriev gorge areas. We finish the day in Cholpon-Ata, where we may visit the open-air petroglyphs and the Rukh Ordo cultural complex if time allows.
DAY 10 — Cholpon-Ata → Bishkek | approx. 250 km
Final riding day back to Bishkek. Depending on timing and conditions, rafting may be possible on the way or after arrival (against supplement).
In the evening, we close the expedition with our traditional MotoBirds traditional farewell dinner and one last chance to replay the best dust, passes, mistakes and moments of the week.

Departure day. Group airport transfers according to the official departure schedule.
